 1 – Colaboración universitaria con una comunidad rural para el establecimiento de un museo de paleofauna fósil en el sur de Costa Rica

Guillermo E. Alvarado – Centro de Investigación de Ciencias Geológicas

Aproximadamente, a partir del año 2000, las personas locales de San Gerardo de Limoncito (cerca de la frontera por Panamá, sector Pacífico de la cordillera Costeña) dieron cuenta de hallazgos de vertebrados fósiles. Desde entonces, el Museo Nacional, con sede en la capital, San José, ha trabajado en la recolección, descripción detallada y salvaguarda de los especímenes, en su mayor parte del Mioceno Tardío, según determinaciones de los paleontólogos César Laurito y Ana L. Valerio. Representa uno de los mejores yacimientos de fósiles (Fossillagerstätte, en alemán; en plural Fossillagerstätten), con una gran abundancia de fósiles muy bien preservados. También constituye un yacimiento de concentración (Konzentratlagerstätte) debido a que se halla gran densidad de restos de partes duras de origen biológico, en particular huesos de vertebrados y troncos fósiles. Los lugareños de San Gerardo de Limoncito y Sabanilla, por San Vito de Coto Brus, en particular los señores Amado Vargas, Gustavo Ruiz y Cristian Vargas, han estado interesados en el establecimiento de un museo en Sabanilla, donde se pueda mostrar a la población local, nacional y extranjera la riqueza de su historia geológica, salvaguardar el patrimonio en la localidad para las generaciones futuras, y promover la geoeducación y el geoturismo. Estos colectores empíricos han reunido y ubicado en diversas localidades una gran colección de vertebrados e invertebrados fósiles. A raíz de eso, contactaron a la Universidad de Costa Rica y se creó un proyecto de colaboración conjunta comandado por los doctores en geología Valentín Chesnel y César Sequeira; posteriormente se sumaron otros geólogos expertos en diferentes campos, tales como María I. Sandoval, Thais Ramírez, Viviana Gamboa y Guillermo E. Alvarado, así como paleontólogos extranjeros. Dos estudiantes están realizando tesis de licenciatura (Diego Rodríguez y Laura Calvo) con el fin de confeccionar un modelo geológico y estratigráfico de las localidades fosilíferas, descripciones de crustáceos, bioestratigrafía y dataciones micropaleontológicas y radiométricas absolutas utilizando diferentes métodos. Se está dando, además, capacitación y equipamiento a los lugareños y próximamente conferencias. Varios resultados geológicos, cronoestratigráficos, paleontológicos y tafonómicos novedosos están en proceso y sus resultados se darán pronto a conocer. Además, ya se están estableciendo los contactos para establecer el museo.

Internal meeting GOAL – Paraguay

Technical talk on geosciences in Paraguay

On October 31, 2017, a “Technical talk on geosciences”, organized by the Faculty of Geology and the GOAL (in the auditorium of the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences of the National University of Asunción) was held. GeO Network of Latinamerican-German ALumni), chapter Paraguay.

Five professionals, all of them GOALists, have presented the following topics:
